Tornado Watch

A tornado watch has been issued for a lot of middle TN until 6:00 A.M. Grundy and Marion Counties are not in the watch area but storms are getting close.

Severe Weather Imminent

At this point severe weather is guaranteed. I do not think we are going to get as bad as Memphis and Mississippi is going to get though. The main threat will be for supercells which I think will stay to the west and south but that does not mean they do not have the potential to make it to middle TN. If you have not already done so please make a plan on what to do when severe weather hits tonight. What I do think will be the main threat for us will a squall line which is going to develop later on tonight, in the line will be the potential for bow echos which can have up to 100mph straight line winds but I also cannot rule out the possibility for tornadoes. The timing on this event will be 12A.M. to 7A.M. Monday morning. Attached is maps showing what is expected.

Severe Weather Highly Possible

Severe weather is scheduled to hit northern Alabama and Middle Tennessee Sunday night through Monday morning.  Now I do not want to cause panic but this will be a very dangerous situation. The main threat will be supercell thunderstorms that will be forming in front of a squall line Sunday night. A secondary threat will be the development of bowechoes which can grow to 20 miles in diameter and produce up to 100mph straight line winds. I want to stress to you to be aware of the weather and have your weather radios on. To give you an idea of the seriousness of this developing situation SPC is considering to upgrade the risk to a moderate risk for severe weather, statistically this would be a 30-45% chance of severe weather.

New Tornado Watch

The tornado watch for most of west TN has been cancelled. A new tornado watch has been issued for most of middle and east TN along with parts of northern Alabama and Georgia.  The main threat with these storms is straight line wind and cloud to ground lightning. Today's high will be 55 with shower and thunderstorms off and on until about 1 P.M.

Friday, January 20, 2012

Tornado Watch

A tornado watch is now in effect for most of middle and west Tennessee until 5:00 A.M. Please have you weather radios on and set to alarm, also stay tuned to local media, and commercial radio. As of 11:00 P.M. a squall line is moving through West Tennessee near Clarksville. The storms that will affect us will be coming in from the southwest. I will be monitoring this situation as it progresses overnight and will update you on any warnings as they are issued.

URGENT Weather Information

I do not want to cause panic but please be advised that there is a slight chance for a severe weather outbreak Sunday night into Monday morning. Although this is not expected to be anything like April 27, there is a high probability for supercell thunderstorms to develop Sunday night. I know it can be a little annoying when you are trying to sleep and the weather radio keeps going off, but I urge everyone to have your weather radio on and set to alarm Sunday night. You will not have time to prepare for a tornado when it is headed toward you in the middle of the night so please make plans at this time on what you will do if you come under a tornado warning.

You may read more about the threat at this link http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/outlook/day3otlk.html

Chance for Severe weather tonight

Tonight and tomorrow expect showers and thunderstorms. The storm prediction center has put middle Tennessee under a slight risk for severe weather. The main threat will be for damaging winds but there is a chance for a embedded super cell. Be sure to stay tuned to your NOAA weather radio. I will be monitoring the situation and updating this site if any counties in middle TN do come under any warnings. Attached is the map showing were severe weather is possible.

Soggy, Cloudy Week Ahead

Today and tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with showers and maybe a thunderstorm arriving Friday night. Saturday temperatures will be around 59 with showers and thunderstorms. Sunday will be around 60 with Clouds and drizzle. Monday temperatures will be 54 cloudy. Tuesday will be sunny and 54. Now to a long range look. For those who want snow, it might be around the corner. Long range models are hinting at arctic oscillation going negative by January's end. I will give more details on this as more refined data becomes available. Attached is a graph for arctic oscillation and a graphics showing how arctic oscillation works and a model showing the rain for Saturday.

Update On Thunderstorm Potential

This is a current view at radar as of 2:50 P.M. The storm have weakened since lunch time and the heaviest rain and winds are now going north and south of us. The southern line is now doing what is called training which means the storms are lined up and crossing the same area over and over causing heavy rainfall totals in a short amount of time. This causes flooding and a flood warning has been issued as you can see the green warning box in northern Alabama and Mississippi on radar.

Severe Weather Threat

Be on the lookout for severe thunderstorms starting at 2-3 P.M. Attached is a current view at radar. The red boxes are severe thunderstorm warnings and the purple boxes are tornado warnings.

Thursday looks quiet and partly sunny with rain returning late Friday night. Saturday will be cloudy with drizzle, but Sunday looks to be partly cloudy with temperature around 60.
